Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome in Aiken, SC
Tarsal tunnel syndrome occurs when the tibial nerve is compressed as it passes through the tarsal tunnel — a narrow space inside the ankle. It can cause burning, tingling, and numbness along the inner ankle and foot. Angela Molnar DPM provides evaluation and treatment for tarsal tunnel syndrome for patients in Aiken and the CSRA.

Nerve Compression
The tibial nerve passes through the tarsal tunnel alongside tendons and blood vessels. When pressure builds in this space — from swelling, flat feet, injury, or other causes — the nerve becomes compressed and symptoms develop.
Flat Feet & Overpronation
Flat feet or overpronation can stretch and place increased tension on the tibial nerve, making individuals with these foot types more susceptible to tarsal tunnel syndrome.
Ankle Injury or Swelling
A prior ankle sprain, fracture, or chronic swelling around the ankle can narrow the tarsal tunnel and compress the nerve over time.

When To See a Podiatrist
If you are experiencing burning, tingling, or numbness along the inside of your ankle or into the foot, a podiatric evaluation can help identify whether tarsal tunnel syndrome or another nerve condition is the cause. Early treatment typically produces better outcomes.
